Walker Seafoods Australia
Time in the industry – 12 years
My husband and I are the owners of Walker Seafoods Australia based in Mooloolaba QLD. We focus on export grade, MSC certified Yellowfin Tuna, Swordfish and Albacore. We started with 1 vessel and now own 5 vessels and are the largest quota holder in the Commonwealth Eastern Tuna Billfish Fishery. I come from a corporate sales background and as our business started to grow I left corporate world to focus on building our business and brand.
What do you love about the seafood industry –
There is so much diversity in this industry, a normal day includes talking with chefs buyers about the fish we are sending, pre selling our catch all over the world including Boston, New York, Hawaii, Switzerland and Sydney, updating social media, grading fish and answering hundreds of emails! There is a real passion in the seafood industry which I love and it’s exciting and rewarding to be supplying sustainably caught fish to consumers.
What do you enjoy about being a woman in the seafood industry –
There is so much to learn in this industry and I think being a woman I bring a different perspective to our business. I really enjoy talking with fish buyers and it was interesting when I first started that some of them only wanted to deal with my husband assuming he was in charge of everything. There is a lot more respect from the men in this industry than previous corporate positions I have held.
Biggest achievement you have had? –
Certainly gaining MSC certification for our business as we are the first tuna company to do this in Australia. I saw that the focus worldwide is on the sustainability of seafood and MSC would be critical to ensure the longevity of our business. It also helps consumers and chefs understand that our fishing method is sustainable and we are committed to ensuring this for the future.
Favourite memorable moment? –
There are so many but being a finalist in the Delicious Produce Awards and winning Agribusiness of the Year at the Sunshine Coast Business Awards.
