‘BE BOLD FOR CHANGE’
WESTERN AUSTRALIA’S LINDA WILLIAMS
Linda is a current Director of the Western Rock Lobster Council (WRLC) and the Western Australian Director on the National Board of the Women’s Industry Network Seafood Community (WINSC).
She also serves on the Building Community Support committee for the Western Australian Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC) and is a member of the Western Australian Research Advisory Committee (WARAC). Linda and her husband own a licence in the West Coast Rock Lobster Fishery, son Chris is now working the family business.
WINSC: When and how did you get involved in the seafood industry?
LINDA: That’s a fairy tale story really. I was 23, fed up with life in England and decided to take a six month working holiday to Australia. I have a brother who lives in Melbourne and was on my way to start my adventure. I met my future husband on the airplane (somewhere over Bombay), eventually ended up in a small fishing town on the West coast of Australia called Lancelin, thus began my journey in the lobster fishing industry and 38 years later we are still excited to be a part of this wonderful fishery.
WINSC: What is your biggest reward working in the seafood industry?
LINDA: The People! Anyone associated with the seafood industry be it harvesters, processors, buyers, retailers, are the most passionate people I have ever met. To many ‘fishing is not just a job, it’s a way of life’ and I really do hope that this wonderful industry can be carried on to our grandchildren and their children. There’s never a dull moment in this industry and the diversity of its people makes it even more colourful.
WINSC: Would you encourage women to follow a career in the seafood industry?
Linda: Definitely. It’s still very much a male dominated industry however I believe that if you have confidence in yourself and know what you are talking about then your views are just as deserving as those men that you are working with. Never be afraid to speak up and express your opinion even though you may be the only woman in the room. The seafood industry is an industry for the future with the world hungry for healthy and sustainable food, opportunities abound!
